The Pittsburgh County Fair
Sunday September 17th, 2023 at Allegheny Commons Park West
10am- 5pm.
Admission is free.
The first ever Pittsburgh County Fair (most likely because Pittsburgh is not a County) is upon us to celebrate urban agriculture and all things homemade and handmade in the City of Pittsburgh on September 17th at Allegheny Commons Park West. This free all-ages event features a packed line-up of hands-on demonstrations, workshops, contests, local farms, vendors, live music, farm animals, plus local food and beer. Presented by Ferment Pittsburgh in partnership with Grow Pittsburgh, and with support from the City of Pittsburgh.
The Fair is excited to welcome Amirah Mitchell of Sistah Seeds from outside of Philadelphia who will be teaching a workshop on seed-saving, as well as holding seed-saving demonstrations. Additional workshops include topics on Fermented Foods and Mushroom Cultivation by local experts.“Make-Your-Own” activity stations offer a chance for the public to try their hand at a variety of skills using locally farmed materials such as homemade sunflower oil, sorghum pressing, and sauerkraut. Attendees will also be able to dye event t-shirts blue with locally grown indigo. Demonstrations throughout the day include fiber-making, composting, and thresh-thrash: bean threshing to live thrash music.
Attendees are encouraged to participate by bringing their tomatoes grown in the City to enter into the “Best Tomato in Pittsburgh Contest.” Prizes will be awarded to the top tomatoes. Local gardeners are also encouraged to bring their plant stories, whether historical, personal, or family-related to share in written word at the Plant Stories section of the Farm Show.
Throughout the day there will be pony rides, games, sustainability-focused vendors, bands, delicious food including The Pickled Chefs’ grilled cheese sandwiches, beer from Grist House Craft Brewery, and plenty of silliness like pumpkin sail boats. Full details can be found at:
