August was a busy month at our production sites!
At the Frick Greenhouse and Shiloh Farm, Manager Cassandra Morgan has been doing lots of summer produce! Tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, tomatillos, beets, greens (swiss chard, kale and collards), carrots, summer squash, cucumbers, turnips, leeks and herbs have been harvest between the two sites!
When she’s not harvesting, Cassandra and her apprentices have been getting fall crops like cabbage, broccoli, turnips and scallions in the ground. They also planted three fig trees at Shiloh that were raised in the Frick Greenhouse!
Shiloh plans on expanding growing space next year. To prepare, Cassandra and her team have started to sheet mulch the new areas. This process involves putting cardboard on the grass then layering organic materials overtop. These materials include shredded leaves, straw, compost, spent garden plants and grass clippings. Those materials will sit over fall and winter and the areas will be ready for planting next spring and summer!
Shiloh Farm Stand, which happens every Thursday from 3-6:00 p.m. through October, is busy with loyal customers from North Point Breeze and Homewood visiting every week. Things are busy at Braddock Farms as well. Manager Marshall Hart has been busy with his farm apprentices. Succession plantings at Braddock are starting to flourish – the second planting of corn, third planting of beans and third of squash are all producing. They are rapidly selling tomatoes and greens, with a large crop of chard.
To prepare for fall, Braddock Farms has planted collards, kale, radishes, turnips, broccoli and cabbage. They have also cleared the way for a new processing shed, going up at the end of August.
